You Can't Catch a Canary in a Pipe Dream

Submitted by Roger:

Willa worked at a hotel and she asked me if I wanted to meet her after she was done with her shift.  There was a cafe inside of the hotel, and she thought that it would be a good place to meet up.

Things started off on the wrong foot just after we met up.  She told me that we were going to be joined by a few of her friends, whose shifts ended not too long after her own.  I thought it was clear that this was meant to be a date (I was sure to say the word at least twice when we were planning it) but maybe she had something else in mind.

Her few friends turned out to be half a dozen friends, all of whom were women except for one guy.  The women looked to be in their mid-twenties, but I swear it was just like being back in junior high .  They would glance at me, whisper to each other, and giggle.

At one point, the guy, who was large, around 30, and had been silent the entire time, looked up over his coffee in the middle of everything and said, "Can't catch a canary in a pipe dream."  He looked back down.

Everyone ignored him, and he started nodding to himself.  Willa was completely absorbed in her friends.  I tried making conversation with her, but she wouldn't spend too long talking to me before someone else cut in and took her attention away.

I thought that maybe it was her way of testing me, to see how I did in a social group of her friends, so I put aside trying to impress her and became conversational with everyone.  Her friends really responded to me, except for the guy.

I ended up talking at length with one of her friends, who gave me her number without me even asking for it.  Willa definitely saw it, and definitely didn't appear to like it.  She said, "Hey!  Let's not forget who's on a date with who here!"

One of her friends asked, "This is a date?"  Laughter.  I'm glad that someone else noticed.

Willa stood up not too long after and said that she had to go.  I asked her if she wanted me to go with her, but she told me not to, so I didn't.  I stayed chatting with her friends for another half-hour before I left, myself.

I ended up dating her friend for a little while, and that was awesome.

  1. Why are people so opposed to having someone's friends along for a date? I like to meet my date's friends very early on, to see if I could tolerate putting up with them and their friends.

  2. The purpose of a date is to get to know someone better. That's hard to do when you're surrounded by other people vying for your attention.

  3. Im glad you got hooked with one of her friend instead. And what about that guy? Is that all he said? Sorry for my ignorance but WTF does "Can't catch a canary in a pipe dream" mean?

  4. Sounds to me like you were set up.
It was her friend who was after you dude.

  5. I can't believe she brought her friends on a date like that. It's not a date if all their buddies are there. That was so low of her to do. At least you got to score with her friend!

  7. In my pipe dreams, I catch canaries all the time. The guy was lying.

  8. There's nothing wrong with bringing friends to a date in some situations and not ambushed. If she invites you to board game night or a show or something like that it works because you all have common entertainment to share in or discuss after. The friends should help you two get to know each other while giving you buffer room too. It's best though on a second or third date or something spontaneous such as calling you to come along on to something they've already planned.
