Unapparent

Story Sent in by Hugh:

Out on my first date with Donna, she actually asked me, "Do you think my mother would like you?"

I said, "I hope so. I look forward to meeting her in due time."

Donna said, "She's dead." Then Donna teared up a bit and sobbed a little.

"You going to be okay?" I asked her.

She said, "Why would you even bring up meeting her? That was really insensitive."

"How was I supposed to know? And you were the one who brought her up, thank you."

Donna shook her head. "I wondered if she'd like you, not if you'd be meeting her. That was really insensitive."

"I didn't know she was dead," I said, "Sorry."

She snapped, "Then ask next time! You always ask someone before you open your mouth!"

"Jesus. Okay. Fine. New subject."

It was awkward for the rest of dinner, and we only went out that one time. While I'm still not sure if Donna's mother would've liked me, I'm pretty positive that she would've been disappointed in Donna.
