Thanks, Mom

Story Sent in by Lucinda:

I was out with Ryan for the first time and at first everything went well. He was a gentleman and considerate and for the first time I had hoped that a guy I was on a date with wasn't a jerk. Trust me: I dated a long, long line of them.

We were taking a walk after dinner when he took my hand and continued walking. It was an unexpected but nice gesture. Then we stopped at a bridge that over looked a river and I began to wonder if he was going to kiss me. He turned to me, pulled out his phone, dialed a number, and put it to his ear. I wasn't expecting that. What I expected even less was the following conversation he had:

"Hey. I'm out with a friend. It cool if I make out with her?" He glanced at me.

A woman's voice went shrill on the other end of the conversation but I couldn't hear her exact words.

He said, "Take a chill pill. Fine. Fine. I'll come home."

He hung up, put his phone away, and asked me, "What a bitch, huh?"

"Who was that?" I asked.

"You don't need to know," he said, then he hugged me tight. "She's probably gonna flip out when she finds out I held your hand, but whatever. She sucks and that's all you need to know. Goodnight."

Never saw him again.

  1. Was his name Norman and did he own a creepy hotel?

Could have been his wife or girlfriend, but guys don't usually ask them for permission.

  3. @La Marchlewski - loving the edit! :)

In my online dating days, the boards were riddled with peeps claiming to be in an open marriage...not that they'd tell you before the first date.

Better a phone call at bridge than an awkward moment later.

  4. Yeah. One time I was friendly with one of the guards at the train station. We'd talk in the afternoons after I'd get off the train. He went on a trip to his home country and when he came back, she said he'd gotten married but he and his wife had an "understanding." I was like "Yeah, no." and never talked to him again.

  5. Mid-date phone calls - some times they are done to get permission, some times they are done to get "help"
