The Unimportance of Being Alex

Story Sent in by Alex:

Laura and I met online and agreed to meet up in person. On the night of our first date, I met up with her, gave her a big hello, and asked her if she was ready for dinner.

She shrugged. "I guess."

I asked, "What's wrong?"

She said, "I'm not sure if this date's such a good idea."

I didn't even have a chance to inadvertently mess it up, and she was already canceling out on me? What gives? I said, "What's the problem?"

She replied, "I forgot up until about a minute ago: you have the same name as a kid who was really mean to me in grade school."

"So? What does that have to do with me?"

"Well, he was really mean. He used to hit and tease me."

I waited a moment, then repeated, "So? I'm not him."

She sighed, "Yeah, but you have the same name. I'm sorry. I'm just wasting both of our time."

She walked away. I said, "So you're going to punish every guy named Alex forever because of what one Alex did years ago?"

She didn't reply. I called after her, "That's like me punishing every woman for something that my ex-girlfriend did."

She kept going, and I let her go. I wished that she had mentioned her hang-up before I took the time to ready and head out for the date, but best that she showed me what she was really like early on, I guess.

I didn't plan to write her or call her, of course, but she did send me a short email:

"Dear Alex: Sorry about tonight. Maybe you should tell other Alexs you know to be nicer to me in the future. I just can't do this. Sorry."

Take note, other Alexes: this girl is out there, and she's mad.

  1. I'm going to change my name to Alex and thus avoid her. Who's with me?

  2. Sorry Alex...it had nothing to do with your name.
The same thing happened to my friend Andy when she found out his last name was Bangedherhard... BUT!! she later admitted that she couldn't get past the hairy mole he had growing out of his eyelid.

  3. Which would you rather hear? We can't date because:

    1. You're so ugly, yo momma got drunk just to breast feed you; OR

    2. Uh, I just remembered. You have the same name as a kid in grade school who picked on me.

    You probably deserved it.

I would rather be told I was ugly. At least then there wouldn't be shadow of a doubt in my mind as to how I felt about this person. It's the kind of thing where never knowing exactly what happened bothers me.

  6. @Chilledogg: I'd rather hear the first one because at least I'd get a good laugh.

"Yo momma got drunk just to breast feed you" is gold.

  8. That's funny because my real name is Alex, and there was a Laura I knew in grade school whom I used to tease because she was really annoying.

Regardless, I agree with the other people - she thought you were ugly.
