Site Changes

Hi!

I'll be experimenting with a site redesign today, so if things look a little wackadoo around here for a little bit, then that's why.  If I end up going with something new, then I'd be interested in your feedback.  Thanks for your patience.

  1. a new background color, instead of the red would be nice

  2. What do you recommend? I picked red because of the romantic connotations, but I agree that something darker might be in order.

  3. Dunno, Jared, I've always been fond of the red offsetting those thin blue snow lines at the top. I am sure I'll like what you come up with but I'm quite fond of the old setup.

  4. I think red fits in nicely with the love, blood/violence, and seething rage theme of the blog.

  5. Thanks. I especially wanted to add another column, as having just one to scroll down for all info seemed counter-intuitive, although I still want the centerpiece to be the stories.

  6. I like the way it looks now... easy to read and clear.

I love this site... I just crack up when I read it!

    Great idea for a webpage!

  8. I heartily second Fizziks Opinion, love the simplicity and contrast... not a fan of the beigey violet top stripe. Reminds me of that weird nail-polish that's "hot" right now but looks like death warmed over on an actual human.
But other than that I am a avid reader with a well loved RSS feed. Keep up the good work and see you tomorrow!

  9. I love the site.I read it everyday. I don't care much about the ultimate design but my issue is this; When I read a story, I'm very interested in reading the comments. When I have to open a whole window altogether to read comments before coming back to the original page, it's quite a drag to me.I doubt that I'll be the only one feeling this way and wonder if a better design can integrate both.
Great job though.I recommend it to everybody

  10. Agree with 5:55. Comments are more than half the reason why people read. One feature you could consider adding is ratings to comments, so that a reader in a hurry could get the best commments first.

Some of the regulars, e.g., Nikki add a lot to the site. You owe her a beer.

Although you are working a good theme (wacko, absurd, mentally ill), it doesn't make a difference if the stories delve into relationships as long as the writing is entertaining. Sometimes the stories are not really about a date, but the sudden realization that something is wrong. They work for me, too.

The headlines are witty and also contribute the site's success.

  11. The old illustration at the top seem truncated. Too bad it was good with the flowers and whatever was underneath before.

  12. Nice. Thanks for letting me know.

  13. Just my two cents:

dark backgrounds, larger text, and light font is much more enjoyable to look at, IMHO

  14. love your site! and love the modern twist...it looks crisp, clean and bloody well ready to dive into and read about someone's horrible date.

keep up the great work! btw, the red looks great. consider leaving it for all the reasons everyone has said. it works. no need to reinvent the wheel.

  16. Thanks for all of your input. It'll likely stay the way it is for now, with the minor tweak here and there.

  17. For some reason, your site is now way slower to open for me, pretty much freezes the computer- probably more my computer than your site? But yours is the only site that has started to do this. Very sad, because I LOVE these stories, thanks putting them out there.

  18. Hmmm. I'll look into that. Let me know if it keeps happening, would you?

  19. I liked the old layout more, because it was plain and simple. The new layout isn't horrible, but I prefer simple fonts and backgrounds. Ease of navigation is paramount in site design, and, as that hasn't changed much (except moving the archive links to the right side), it's tolerable. Ultimately, it's your site, so you can do as you please.

Side note @Fizziks: I'm a computational physicist myself, and I'm a big fan of your icon. Is that a giant pi tiramisu?

  20. ABCD is one of my go to sites on my blackberry when I'm waiting around for the train and the layout is much better for that. Before, all the stuff in the side bar loaded first. Now the stories load first! Much better for scrolling.

  21. Was the previous font serif? I can't remember, but I find my mind wandering as I'm reading today. Serifs are kinda easier on my eye, though I know in web design they claim san-serifs are easier.
    My brain just exploded. Disregard.

I like the deep red. You're right, it goes with the theme. The darkness of the red goes with the 'insane/scary love' theme.

  22. @12:29 - Why hiya! It happens to be the groom's cake I made for my friend's wedding (he's a mathematician with the NSA - shhhh!). Three layers of homemade funfetti-style cake, vanilla between layers and choco on the outside. I baked the cake in loaf pans and made a pattern out of baking parchment and used the icing as mortar.

Comp phys is very near and dear to my heart ;)
