Reality Check

Google has 816,000 search results for the phrase, "can't wait to be divorced."  That's potentially 816,000 marriages that are shortly to end.

According to website LegalZoom.com,"A lawyer would charge you approximately $2,080 to obtain a divorce if you have property but no minor children, based on an average hourly rate of $266/hour (2006 Survey of Law Firm Economics, Altman Weil Pensa Publications)."

$2,080/hr.  816,000 divorces.

=$1,697,280,000.

Think about that.

Now think about how much of that you're NOT paying each time you have a bad date with someone who would have been a potential future marriage/divorce.  Each bad date you go on slightly decreases the chances that you'll end up with someone who makes you want to divorce them.  Imagine a dating pool of 7,000,000.  One down, 6,999,999 to go.  Two down, 6,999,998 to go.  And so on.

Going on bad dates saves you money.

You're welcome.

  1. Bad math. It could be that both people in the marriage are googling the same thing - in fact, if it's that bad, it's likely. So it's probably far less than 816,000 imminent divorces.
    Just sayin.

  2. Also, I don't marry each bad date, and one marriage would trade-off with several bad dates for several years at least.

Even if I married three times, that'd cost only $6,240 (except to adjust for inflation). I bet I spend more total on trying to impress *all* my dates across the span of my lifetime (if I date a lot and don't settle soon, early, or prematurely).

  3. Last year I got married, and my wife and I subsequently saved a combined $5000 on our taxes.

If our experience was typical, and your math is correct, a couple will recover the cost of divorce (for both of them) within less than a year of marriage.

Which you clearly haven't.
