That's Not How You Do It

Story Sent in by David:

While out to dinner with Lea, she took a phone call that sounded serious. Her face looked grave and she said, "Oh my God," over and over.

After a couple of minutes, she hung up and said, "I'm sorry, I have to go. My parents and brother and my aunts and uncles and grandparents and friends were in an accident. They're all in the hospital and they need me there now."

At first I was incredulous. "They're all...? What? Was there an explosion at a family reunion or something?"

She said, "There was just an accident and everyone is in the hospital. But I have to go right now."

As she rummaged in her bag for her share of dinner, it hit me that this was her early escape method of ending the date.

I told her, "You're clearly not in any state to drive. I can drop you off at the hospital."

"No!"

She slammed her money on the table and said, "I have to go," once more before leaving.

An hour or so later, I texted her, "I looked on the news for info about the horrible thing that took out your family. There was no mention of it. Is everyone okay?"

She didn't reply. I waited a bit then texted, "I'm coming over. I want to help. Found your address online. Be over soon."

In truth I had done nothing of the sort. I just wanted to catch her in the lie. She didn't reply in any case, and I went to bed.

  1. "Was there an explosion at a family reunion or something?" FOR THE WIN! Nicely done OP.

  2. If you can't read your own story and kind of get a hint as to why she ditched you with such a terrible excuse, then you might be oblivious.

Everything you did after sounded spiteful. She's a crappy person for ditching you like that, but your personality showed even worse.

  3. I'm sorry, but why does it always seem to be the guys that take a minor infraction and ramp up the doucheness? So she tried to duck out. Big deal. Most people have done it. She was too stupid to come up with something believable but that does not give you the right to be an utter creep.

  4. Have to disagree with Buddy and Villy. What she did was tell a lie. Not a small lie but that her entire family and all of her friends were in one simultaneous accident. That deserves a follow up. Even if the OP had believed her, it would deserve a follow up. The date should have been a big girl and used her words if she wanted out of the date. If she had to lie, she could have at least made it believable.

  5. Agreed. "I'm sorry, I'm not really feeling this," is perfectly acceptable. If she lies to him, I fail to see how harmless fun makes him the bad guy.

He decided to be a jerk at first, just because she left for whatever reason. He then took it to 11 by texting over the equivalent of "Hi, I've been stalking you online. I know where you live and I'll be over soon. You'll regret rejecting me!"

I would've considered calling the cops.

  7. What Aidan said. I mean, I might not have considered calling the cops but still, it was too far. If he hadn't done that, I would have absolutely no problem with his reaction. She's tells a ridiculous transparent lie, troll her a little. But don't go that far. In this day and age those kinds of "jokes" are not funny, nor are they anything to be taken lightly. I mean, my college roommate was raped by some dude she met off a dating site, because he did pretty much exactly the same thing, only he obviously wasn't joking.

Just because some stupid bitch tells a white lie that hurts your pride is NOT a good enough reason to try and SCARE her.

  8. Good point Aidan and Villy. OP did take it a step too far.

  9. So, we're all agreed that they are BOTH twats?
