Fly by Night

Story Sent in by Scotty:

Lina asked me during our date if I believed in angels. I don't and I told her so.

"Oh," she said, disappointed, "Why not?"

"Because they don't exist."

"But they do," she informed me.

"Okay," I replied. I wasn't about to waste my time talking her out of it. She had her beliefs and I had my facts. And never the twain shall meet.

"I'm gonna make you believe. By the end of the night, you will."

"Okay."

The rest of dinner was pretty normal, in comparison. We talked about sports (we were both fans), friends, and our various interests.

After dinner, we strolled to a local estate that had its grounds open. It was night but it was beautiful and well-lit. A popular date place but with good reason. We walked to the rear grounds and sat on a bench.

As we looked up into the sky she pointed and said, "There's an angel. Just flew by. Told you! Told you!"

There were clouds above us and a few stars. I said, "Sorry. I must've missed it."

She turned to me as if she was hurt and said, "You saw it! I know you saw it! Angels exist!"

I saw nothing. I said, "Sorry. I'm sure another will be by any moment."

We kept looking up. Every now and then she'd gasp as if she saw something amazing but then sigh as if she realized it was just a duck or wayward seagull. I tried to make conversation about anything else, but she just kept staring up with her mouth open.

When it was clear that no more angels were appearing that night, I decided that it was time for us to leave. She was clearly upset, and of course she took it out on me. "If you had only looked up when I told you to look up, you would've seen it," she said.

Oh well. No angels for me and no second date for her.

  1. Angels come every year OP, didn't you know? Unfortunately they don't have time for miracles. They are too busy strutting.

  2. Lina's a bit cuckoo for Coco Puffs, but Scotty seems like a bit of a douche, so I guess they deserve each other.

  3. "She had her beliefs and I had my facts." Yeah, sorry dude you don't have 'facts' that angels don't exist. You have the belief they don't just like she has the belief they're flying overhead like shooting stars. Lots of people believe in angels and they aren't nuts.

  4. I have friends who believe in fairies, unicorns, and bipartisanship. That doesn't mean they're nuts. Just ignorant.
