A Thousand Miles to Nowhere

Story Sent in by Bev:

Marshall lived almost a thousand miles away. When he first contacted me online I was tempted to dismiss him outright. But he and I seemed to have a lot in common and so we maintained a correspondence.

After several weeks, he wrote to tell me that he wanted to drive to see me. I was flattered and really nervous, but after chatting back and forth about it for a bit I finally decided that we should do it. I didn't own a car at the time otherwise I would've met him somewhere in the middle. He said the trip to me would take two days, and that he'd be in touch while he drove over.

At the end of the first day he texted, "Where r u?"

I wrote back, "At home. How was your first day of driving?"

He texted back, "I drove it all in one day. Where r u?"

I couldn't believe it. He must've been exhausted. I called him but he didn't pick up. I had already texted him my address before he had set out, but I texted it to him again.

No response until the next morning. He texted me a photo of himself in front of a sign for a local motel that was a well-known landmark at a big intersection. He was very clearly nearby. I called him. No answer. I texted him, "What are you doing there? Are you coming over?"

He texted back, "Changed my mind," and I never heard from him again.

  2. Are you sure the pic he texted to you wasn't photoshopped? Because even if he drove sixty miles an hour the entire way without stopping it would still take seventeen hours to drive a thousand miles. I don't know. Something feels weird about the whole thing. Oh well.

    1. I once—and only once—drove 943 miles in one day. It took 16 hours and I was exhausted afterwards, but I know well that it *is* possible.

However, I suspect that this guy was actually local in the first place. That explains his early “arrival”, the motel photo, and perhaps his change of heart.

  3. Either he was never there and the pic was photoshopped, or else it was from a different trip. He faked her out.

  4. On the other hand, who drives 60 on the interstate? It might have just been 12 or 13 hours.

Maybe he faked it, maybe he did it because he just wanted to be an asshole, or maybe he's just really strange. I was wondering if he was offended by something he did.

  5. At least he changed his mind while he was in your state, rather than while having sex with you. Because hey, there's awkward and then there's AWKWARD.

  6. Pretty sure he drove to the adress, saw you and you did not look like your pictures at all.

He concluded that he would rather drive another 17 hours straight then have sex with you. Auch

  7. Best thing that ever happened to you OP. You gave someone, who lived 1000 miles away and was willing to drive it in one day to get to you, YOUR HOME ADDRESS. What were you thinking?! You have clearly not read enough serial killer histories/dating stories on this site.

On the other hand, if OP was a serial killer, this guy was like victim UPS. Good plan OP.
