Even a Magician Can Make a Root Beer Float

Story Sent in by Melanie:

Rocco and I were scheduled to go out on our second date when he called me a few hours before. His voice was shaking, and it sounded as if he'd been crying.

"C-can you… I just need you to l-l-listen," he said.

I was at work, but I stepped into the quiet stairwell to take his call. "What's wrong? Are you okay?"

He said, "I don't… I don't really know what just happened here. I don't know if it actually happened or if I'm going crazy or if it's… if it's mind control or what, but–"

"What happened?"

He slowed his breathing and said, "Are you on a cell phone?"

"Yes."

More breathing, and then, "Can you swing by 515 Elm Street in Sutton after work?"

He wouldn't give me any further details, and after work, I drove to the house he specified and rang the bell. Rocco answered the door, and he looked like a mess, as if he had just woken up and forgotten to do anything else. He beckoned me in.

Once inside, he led me to a room where a two-year-old was crawling around on the floor among a small scattering of toys and clothes. He said to the child, "Do it again. Come on. Show her."

The kid looked up and smiled, then went back to crawling around in a circle. I asked Rocco, "What's this all about?"

He took me aside and said, "This is my sister's kid. Two hours ago, I left her in here to use the bathroom. When I came back, she was floating."

"Floating?"

"Like a foot above the ground. Like someone was holding her, but no one was there."

I glanced from Rocco to the little girl. She was babbling to herself. Rocco went on, "I backed away and then it sounded like someone said, 'Hmmm…' and then she just dropped onto the floor, like whatever was holding her just dropped her. She cried and then I calmed her down but I've been freaking out."

I said, "I think you must have imagined it."

"No. It happened. I know what I saw."

"Have you taken anything today? Any medication or–"

"I'm not high! I'm not crazy! Kelly floated!"

I shrugged and said, "I don't know what to tell you. She seems none the worse."

"A dark spirit or something is in the house and you don't think that's cause for alarm?"

I asked, "Did you tell your sister?"

"No. She'd freak out." He turned to little Kelly and said, "I'm sorry. I've got to protect her."

He scooped her up, carried her out of the room, pointed at me, and yelled to the house, "Take her, instead! Leave my family alone, you hear me? Leave my family alone!"

He ran out the front door with Kelly. I followed him out and watched as he threw her into his car and drove away with her. Realizing that I was alone on a stranger's property with a "malevolent spirit," I climbed into my own car and went on my way.

I didn't hear from Rocco again.

  4. Arthur & Polka Dot = yes.

Honestly, I was expecting a Trainspotting sort of scene with the baby. Pity she just floated.
