Left of Center

Story Sent in by Mira:

Greg asked me out over a dating site. He had a great sense of humor and had an attitude that was refreshing to experience after so many online duds. We met at a restaurant and had what seemed to me like a nice time. It was the sort of date that I wasn't expecting: the sort of date that I didn't want to end.

He asked me, "Up to anything after this?" I told him that I wasn't, and he came up with about four or five post-dinner options.

The one he mentioned that was the most attractive to me was driving by an abandoned factory and trying to enter it. True, I was in first-date attire, but I like to think of myself as always up for something adventurous, given that we were living in a place not too well known for it's adventuresome qualities.

We left the restaurant, returned to our vehicles, and he told me to follow him in his car. I did, for a few miles, until we came to a left turn. He put his signal on, and I followed suit.

He made what looked like a left turn, and then tuned it, unexpectedly, into a u-turn. I followed him, but then, at his next opportunity, he made another u-turn, and another, and then another. He kept going around and around the same concrete island in the road.

I called him up on his cell and asked, "What are you doing?"

He replied, "Driving us to where we're going. Duh."

I asked, "Do you even know where we're going?"

At that, he brought his car to a sudden stop in front of me, and I hit the brakes just in time. There was no one in front of him and no traffic light, so there we were, stopped in the middle of the road.

"Hmmm," he said, "No. Guess not. Do any of us really know where we're going?"

He hung up the phone, then floored it, jetting down the road, through a red light, and away from me. I called him back, but he didn't pick up. It was my guess that the date was over, and I returned home.

  1. The Most attractive of four or five post dinner options "was driving by an abandoned factory and trying to enter it." ??? What were the other choices? Getting Tattoos?, Vandelizing a graveyard? a quick game of Russian roulette ?

  2. Google (sub)urban exploration. A lot of people find that sort of thing enticing.

  3. Based upon the stories on this site, Obama's top priority should be funding a massive program to build thousands of secure mental hospitals across America.

  4. Sounds like a fairly classic "the date went great from one person's perspective and the other one wanted to ditch" story.

Problem is, he asked her if she wanted to do something else after dinner.

  5. ^ That sounds to me totally how it was - the ditching was just a last-moment change of heart. Greg's thought process probably went like this.

During the date: "Well, I'm kinda setting my standards low here, but it's been a while and she does seem like she'll be easy... eh, what the hell."

While driving in circles: "No... no, I don't know if I can do this. I have to draw the line SOMEWHERE. If I hook up with her, will I be ever be able to respect myself?"

While on the phone with the OP: "NO! Screw this. I deserve more. Besides, there's always porn."

While driving away: "Whew, that was a close one. I'm glad I didn't go through with it. Hmmm, maybe I should stop by a supermarket on the way home - the fridge is getting kinda empty."

  6. ^hah!

Exploring can be kind of fun. Especially old historical buildings.

  7. I find it odd that the most interesting idea OP's date had was breaking and entering. What's next, robbing a bank?
